Iceland Halts Deportation of Seriously Ill Palestinian Boy After Public Protests

REYKJAVIK (Dispatches) – An 11-year-old Palestinian boy with Duchenne muscular dystrophy was returned to Landspitali Hospital in Reykjavik on Monday after spending eight hours at Keflavik Airport, where he and his family were awaiting deportation to Spain.  Police officers had taken Yazan Tamimi from the hospital’s Rjodrid nursing and rehabilitation department late last night, where he was receiving care for his neurodegenerative condition. Yazan, who requires constant medical supervision, was asleep when the police arrived. The family’s lawyer, Albert Bjorn Ludvigsson, expressed his outrage over the situation, stating that the deportation plan had been carried out without proper notification or due process.
